Restrict Windows and Web Access for Kids with KidsMenu

Apr. 29th, 2009 By Tim Watson My oldest son likes games and Web surfing, but we don’t want to give him full access to our PC, or to the entire Internet. We’ve experimented with various ways to block him off, with varying success. It wasn’t long ago that I found just the program for which I was looking, a customizable application launcher that serves as an alternate Windows shell. That program is KidsMenu . I should back up for a moment and explain what the “shell” is. The shell is what allows a user to interact with the operating system. For most of us, the default Windows shell is Explorer, which includes the Start Menu, desktop icons, System Tray, etc. If you’ve tinkered with your own PC enough, then you know that kids can find quick and easy ways to (unintentionally) mess up your system. If you’ve ever let your young ones frolic in the big, bad, World Wide Web, then you know what kind of trouble can appear on screen very quickly. KidsMenu is one program that can help prevent such th

PhaseOne P40+

It's been a few moments since Phase One had us lusting after one of its devices, and now the company is back with a 40 megapixel system named, appropriately enough, the P40+. Like the P65+ we peeped last year, this new guy offers two separate image-capture modes -- in this case, you're looking at either a standard mode for full 40 megapixel shooting, or a 10 megapixel Sensor+ mode that gives you a four-fold increase in light sensitivity (ISO to 3200), and a 1.8 fps capture rate. Both modes feature a 12.5 f-stop dynamic range. The camera is shipping now, and it will run you a cool €16,990 ($22,073). Or pick up just the camera back for €14,990 ($19,475). Actually, you might want to think about picking up two. You know, just in case. One more image after the break. Continue reading PhaseOne P40+ medium format camera hits the streets of Copenhagen

How a family of eight can travel from A to B... on just TWO wheels

By Sarah Titterton Last updated at 10:31 AM on 29th April 2009 How does a large family commute anywhere if they have no car and little money? As this picture proves, there are no problems, only solutions. What appears to be an entire family of eight have all piled cheerfully on to one motorcycle. And baby too: The family whizzes by the vehicle clinging tightly to the motorbike

Ultrastar Deluxe - Free Karaoke Software

Apr. 26th, 2009 By Simon Slangen There are many great pieces of karaoke software out there, but without any doubt, Sony’s SingStar is the most popular one amongst the general public. If you can get past the innitial embarassment, there’s really nothing greater than screaming your lungs out after a party, be it with friends or family. One of the main reasons are the nonchalant air the game manages to put down, and how it remains extremely user-friendly and easy to operate for everyone. However, Singstar costs a reasonable deal of money. The system, the game and the branded microphones, all taking a notable bite out of your precious reserves. Especially in these times of recession, one would like to have fun without need to take out his wallet. Ultrastar Deluxe - Win/Mac/Linux

Google alphabet

By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 4:26 PM on 25th April 2009 The first ever 'Google alphabet' has been created using the internet giant's satellite service. It did, however, take six months of 'just pressing the cursor up, up, up' to find all 21 consonants. The 32-year-old only discovered the elusive letter 'K' last week. 'I found them exactly as you think I might have,' he said. 'Slowly moving from page to page over the maps and visually scanning.'  'I did it in my spare time - it was better than doing a sudoku

Now that really IS a lovely bunch of coconuts!

By Chris Johnson Last updated at 8:15 PM on 26th April 2009 Bystanders who saw this bizarre sight trundle its way along the dusty roads to market must have thought this driver had gone 'coco-nuts'. In a desperate attempt to get his haul to market, a coconut seller piled hundreds upon hundreds on the back of a three-wheeled tuk-tuk. But the precarious load looked in danger of falling off as the overloaded motorised rickshaw made its very slow journey. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="499" caption="Coconut: This is one overloaded rickshaw! FBI WANTED 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' leaker

By Alan Duke, CNN LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Someone stole an "incomplete and early version" of the next installment in the blockbuster "X-Men" movie series and posted it on the Internet this week, according to the studio that owns the billion-dollar film franchise. Hugh Jackman stars in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." An early version of the film was leaked to the Web. Twentieth Century Fox said the FBI was investigating who leaked "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which is set for release in U.S. theaters May 1. The digital file quickly spread across the Internet and was available for free, but illegal, downloading from hundreds of easily found Web sites. "The source of the initial leak and any subsequent postings will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law; the courts have handed down significant criminal sentences for such acts in the past," the studio's statement said. Access Blocked Websites using Proxy Servers

By Linda Martin-Peoples There may be times when you might want to use an anonymous free prfoxy server so you can safely surf the net without your information being available to hackers, spammers and scammers…. or anyone else, for that matter! Web proxies are used for hiding your IP address and by-passing work, school or other web filters. For instance, if Facebook or Myspace is blocked on the computer you are using, you can easily gain access by using a web proxy. HideMyAss - Free and speedy proxy service. Use it to hide your IP address and get through network filters. HideMyAss is part of a Privax proxy network , so if it’s blocked, there are several others you give a try. There is nothing to configure, just type-in the address of the website you want to visit and press ‘Go’.

10 Kebiasaan Kecil Pemicu Diabetes

Pengganti: Jus dingin tanpa gula.* Sumber : Prevention 1. Teh manis Penjelasannya sederhana. Tingginya asupan gula menyebabkan kadar gula darah melonjak tinggi. Belum risiko kelebihan kalori. Segelas teh manis kira-kira mengandung 250-300 kalori (tergantung kepekatan). Kebut

Giant keyboard art in Shenzhen metro station

by Laura June , posted Apr 23rd 2009 at 4:51PM If you're at the Shenzhen Metro station any time soon, you'll unlikely happen across the beautiful, beautiful sight above. The station -- which is in Shenzhen just north of Hong Kong -- has installed some keyboard art that really speaks to the typist in our souls -- we even type in our dreams occasionally. The keys function as seats to relax in while you wait for your train, though why they chose the keys they chose (Enter, M, <, L, P and ;) is anybody's guess. [Via Engadget Chinese ]

Nokia 110 Hackable !

Apparently some shady hackers and cyber-criminals have recently started offering upwards of $30,000 for the Nokia 1100 which were manufactured at a specific plant in Bochum, Germany. You may ask yourself, "why?" Well, beyond the obvious answer (style), certain makes of the super-popular handset can apparently be reprogrammed to use someone else's phone number, allowing them to receive text messaged bank passwords (common in parts of Europe), thus making it much, much easier to steal people's money. The software flaw has been pointed out by Ultrascan Advance Global Investigations, who were contacted by police who had noted the curiously high offering prices on the old-timey candybar. Nokia has contended that it has not identified any software problems which would allow such use, so it's hard to say what exactly is going on at this point, but we'll let you know if we hear anything concrete. EagleTec Nano flash drive

by Donald Melanson Still haven't found a USB drive small enough for your needs? Then you might want to consider EagleTec's new Nano flash drive now available from the ever dependable folks at Brando, which measures an impossibly tiny 19 x 15 x 6 mm and weighs in at a mere three grams. Despite that size, however, you'll still get a fairly generous 4GB or 8GB of storage ($22 and $33, respectively), and an included lanyard that'll let you attach it to something you're less likely to misplace, though you're on your own keeping the drive's cap from wandering off. How Disney recycled its classic cartoons

Recycling has only become fashionable in the past few decades but it seems that Disney has been doing it since the dark ages. Researchers have revealed that scenes from much-loved cartoons such as Robin Hood and Winnie The Pooh were copied from the studio's earlier hits. Disney has 'recycled' some of its backgrounds and animation sequences over and over again. Look familiar? Mowgli throws a stone in The Jungle Book (1967) and Christopher Robin in an identical scene in Winnie The Pooh ten years late r

Happy Administrative Professionals Week!

by Kara Kovalchik - April 20, 2009 - 1:21 PM Happy Administrative Professionals Week! This annual salute to office staff was first observed 57 years ago, though it was called Secretaries’ Day at the time. (Personal anecdote: years ago I worked in a small office where I had no clerical responsibilities; I purchased steel, I sold steel, I inspected steel as it was processed. But my boss gave me a Secretaries’ Day card every year because (I’m not making this up) I was a “girl.” Gender stereotypes aside, please enjoy a few office-related facts as you rightfully waste a few minutes surfing mental_floss on company time. It’s your day, after all! The Original Cube Farm What item leads the field in office furniture sales? None other than the dreaded cubicle, to the tune of approximately $3 billion per year. Robert Propst introduced the original cubicle design in 1968. His idea was to provide workers with more desk space, as well as shelving at different levels, which gave them room to spread

How To Make Microsoft Office 2007 Look Like Office 2003

Apr. 20th, 2009 By Saikat Basu I remember the first time I set my eyes on Microsoft Office2007. It was love at first sight because everything seemed so stylish. At second sight, I found myself a bit lost among the buttons of the new Ribbon menu. I knew there was a bit of a learning curve ahead of me. Though I mastered it in a short while, I must confess that it did take some getting used to. That was me…but then there were some (and still are) who found the learning curve a bit steeper. Accustomed to the older pre-2007 classical interface, they thrashed about with the new one. Baffling for most, I guess. Necessity is the mother of invention and so someone thought up UBitMenu (and thankfully made it free!) UBitMenu is a small add-in for Microsoft Office 2007 ( Excel, Word, and PowerPoint ) and it brings back Office2007 back into your grasp by giving the menu - the Office2003 makeover. It gets added on as an additional menu tab in the three Office 2007 applications. While you will ge

The most successful YouTube video ever

Less than two weeks after it was uploaded to the site Susan's audition has been watched more than 100million times - making it set to smash the previous record. The current most watched clip on YouTube is comedian Judson Laipply's Evolution Of Dance, which has been viewed 118 million times since it was uploaded in April 2006. Panasonic 1080p twin-lens P2 camcorder for native 3D captures

by Darren Murph , posted Apr 20th 2009 at 5:09PM You know that 3D bandwagon you're still hesitant to jump on? We get the feeling that this year's NAB show may just push you over the top. Shortly after hearing of Fujifilm's newest P2 memory cards comes this, a conceptual camcorder in which to eventually slot 'em in. Currently, Panasonic's 3D Full HD Camera Recorder is merely a prototype, but it's made clear that the company intends to bring this to market as soon as possible. Essentially, the device will boast a twin-lens system for capturing 3D footage natively in 1080p, and all of the video streams will be stored on Panny's professional P2 cards. It's hard to say if this would even be useful for 2D shooting on the side, but with practically every major studio at least considering (if not committing to ) 3D production, we'd say it's a solid investment on Panasonic's part either way. YouTube Symphony Orchestra: from idea to reality

(Cross-posted from the YouTube Blog ) Today represents the final culmination of an idea many months in the making: a first-class global orchestra brought together by YouTube. This week, over 90 musicians from around the world -- including a Spanish guitarist, a Dutch harpist and a Lithuanian birbyne player — have gathered in New York City in preparation for tonight's historic YouTube Symphony Orchestra performance at Carnegie Hall. And today on YouTube's homepage, we are proud to present the world premiere of Tan Dun's composition "Internet Symphony, Eroica," as selected and mashed up from nearly 3,000 video submissions from around the globe. For SALE !! Slumdog Millionaire star for £200,000 !!

By Daily Mail Reporter The father of a child actress in the film Slumdog Millionaire is offering to sell her for £200,000, it was claimed yesterday. Rafiq Qureshi, who lives in poverty in Mumbai, reportedly attempted to trade nine-year-old Rubina Ali in an illegal adoption deal. Rubina played the young heroine Letika in the movie, which has grossed £185million worldwide and swept the board at the Oscars. Squalor: Rubina in the slums where her home is a hut It had been hoped that the film's success would transform her life. But her father and an uncle were said to have claimed that they are being forced to put her up for sale because the family has not received enough of the proceeds.

Ora ilLegale clock tips to compensate for daylight savings time

by Darren Murph , posted Apr 18th 2009 at 9:12AM Genius. Pure genius. In order to save us all from smashing buttons on our digital alarm clocks or stripping the gears in our analog ones, designer Denis Guidone has dreamed up this masterpiece. The Ora ilLegale clock boasts no numbers and is obviously missing a significant portion of its base; these two factoids enable it to become the easiest clock to adjust to changes in daylight savings... well, ever. The best part? We're told that it'll actually hit production soon, though there's no indiciation of just how pricey it'll be. Not like it matters -- you're totally buying one, and you know it. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) Trailer

This spectacular sequence is London seen through the eyes of Harry Potter's enemies the Death Eaters. David Beckham is the Terminator

By Simon Cable He has tried the Indiana Jones look and once dressed up as a Roman gladiator. He has even impersonated a dragon-slaying prince in a fairytale-themed shoot for one of his many advertising campaigns. Now David Beckham had added an equally bizarre look to his repertoire. The former England football captain has stripped down for a futuristic photoshoot that appears to owe its inspiration to the Terminator films. Man or machine? David Beckham in an advert for the new Motorola AURA, which will cost £1,400 In a rapid departure from his usual, more wholesome look, the star is pictured frowning at the camera with part of his face torn away. Images of his skeleton have been superimposed upon his naked chest while one of his eyes has been replaced by a red laser.

Can Good Posture Leave a Better First Impression?

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="193" caption="By WomenCo. (View Profile)"] [/caption] It takes less than six seconds to leave a first impression. It is said that we ought not judge a book by its cover, but come on, isn’t it the color, the design, the layout, and title that draws us to pick up a book we’ve never heard of before? Notice what your assumptions are about a person when you are first introduced to her or him. Spend some time people-watching and notice the assumptions you make. Is most of what you hear yourself saying negative or positive? Something that most of us don’t take notice is how we stand or walk. The military requires soldiers to have the best postures. Why do you suppose the military trains its soldiers to march straight and tall? What possible difference can standing tall make? Let’s say you are going for a job interview or you are networking at an event to build your business. Within seconds you have already said a

Reader Finds Card Skimmer On Bank ATM

Dan says over the weekend he discovered a card skimmer attached to the ATM at his local WaMu branch. He pulled it off and took photos of it. He writes: This past weekend I went to use the local WaMu ATM to get some cash money. When I walked up to the ATM something struck me as funny…I couldn't quite put my finger on it but the card reader didn't look right, like it wasn't completely attached. I grabbed and pulled at the card reader and, lo and behold, it came off!

Penabung Kecil Pun Terkecoh

Everyday Lives of Super Heroes

Ever wonder what it’d be like if Superheroes were just regular people like you and I?  Like what if Superman had a job as a limo driver and he didn’t necessarily have any superhuman powers?  He was just a dude wearing a Superman cape driving a limousine. When you add the element of costume and real life it winds up being pretty hilarious.  So in other words, I found some cool pictures of people in superhero costumes doing normal “human” things. Ugh, when you put it that way it seems kind of dull, but it’s pretty damned funny. Enjoy Thanks to Dulce Pinzon for creating these.

Thankfully for everyone, Gibson is just a big, friendly puppy dog.

Facebook Pages We'd Like to See

After months of searching and researching, we've found the Facebook profiles of Elvis Presley, Steve Jobs, Satan, and more. Okay, we made them up. Facebook just seemed incomplete without them. Craig Anton, Ron Babcock, and Mark Sullivan, with page design by Marcia Neumeier Apr 1, 2009 12:00 pm It's getting to the point where everybody--everybody--has a Facebook page. Well, not everybody. In fact some very important people--personages who undoubtedly would have very interesting pages--are nowhere to be found on Facebook. Some of them are just too dead to get the job done--though you don't have to be a human being to have a Facebook page . As a result, by today's standards, the record on these people is incomplete (no Twitter trail? no Facebook bio?). Nor do we know how they would've behaved on Facebook: Would John have defriended Ringo after the Beatles broke up? Would Joan of Arc have continued updating her status right up until the fateful moment of incineration (
